From The Oughtred Society

President's Report
Robert De Cesaris, Granite Bay, California

After very successful meetings in Las Vegas NV, Mountain View CA, and in Leiden The Netherlands, we now look forward to the East Coast Meeting to be held on November 6, 2010, in Vineland NJ. Over the years, the Fall Meeting has offered a variety of interesting locations and has provided additional opportunity to meet fellow collectors, present new information, and to acquire new instruments for their collections.

Our new editorial staff, under the leadership of Robert Koppany as Editor and Otto van Poelje and Ted Hume as Associate Editors, has continued to publish the Journal throughout 2010 with the same exceptional quality and content as their first edition. The Fall/Winter edition of The Journal for 2010 has been printed and is scheduled for distribution in October. In addition, copies of the OS-published book, Calculating with Tones - the Logarithmic Logic of Music by Klaus Kuehn and Rodger Shepherd, a book that has been well-received both by calculating device and music enthusiasts, are still available for purchase from the OS.

For the first time, The Oughtred Society will be hosting the 17th International Meeting of Collectors of Historical Calculating Instruments (IM 2011) in the USA, in September 2011 at MIT, in Cambridge, MA. As you know, these meetings have traditionally been held in Europe with The Netherlands, UK, and Germany generally rotating as the host country, with occasional hosting by other European countries. The Oughtred Society takes great pride and pleasure in hosting this event in the USA in 2011, the 20th anniversary year of the founding of the Society. The meeting will be held at the MIT Campus and MIT Museum in Cambridge, MA on September 23-25, 2011 with the theme “European Roots of American Slide Rules” with the subtheme, “Technology Advances from the Old World to the New”. These meetings involve a great deal of preparation, and it is very impressive how the European collecting groups, almost seamlessly, organize and conduct their meetings every year and pass the baton from site-to-site. Each host sets an increasingly higher standard of excellence, and of course, a basic element in the success of these programs has been the papers that are selected and presented. We have an excellent venue in Cambridge MA, with both the MIT and Harvard Museums on site, so the stage is set for a very successful International Meeting.

President Emeritus Tom Wyman, having attended many of the International Meetings since their inception, has graciously accepted the position of Proceedings Chairperson and has been diligently forming our Proceedings Committee, working closely with our IM 2011 Meeting Coordinator, Kate Matthews. In addition, we have held several meetings with Dr. Debbie Douglas, MIT Museum Curator of the K&E Collection, and her experience and input have been most helpful in assisting the Proceedings Committee. We will be co-ordinating IM 2011 with the formal exhibition opening of the K&E Collection at the MIT Museum and expect to offer a private tour of the Harvard Museum collection as well as offer tours of several important historic sites in the Boston area.

Please contact Tom if you have any interest in participating in the Proceedings Committee. We have also begun to accept abstracts for IM 2011; again please contact Tom if you have research that you would like to share and to submit an abstract for IM 2011.

Very best regards,

Bob
