THE OUGHTRED SOCIETY FALL MEETING

You are invited to attend the new Oughtred Society Fall Meeting, which will be held Saturday, November 6, 2010 at the Wingate Inn, Rt 55 & Landis Avenue, Vineland, New Jersey.

Please note: For those wishing to stay at the Hotel Saturday night, we recommend making reservations ASAP as space then is limited. Members will be responsible for their own lodging. Lodging is available from the Wingate, and there is a Ramada Inn and a Hampton Inn located at the same exit.

This meeting is open to Oughtred Society members. Members are expected to bring items to display/sell. First-time attendees are not required to prepare a display. Half-tables are available. Non-members may attend only as guests of existing members. Guests may not show items or participate in the afternoon auction).

We are hoping the reduced fee and the Southern New Jersey location will attract members who have not attended one of the Oughtred Society's previous Fall Meetings. Over the years, the Fall Meetings have offered a variety of interesting and helpful events to those who attended. Members have met fellow collectors, presented the results of their research, acquired new instruments for their collections, learned from other members who have varied experience and knowledge, and visited a number of interesting museums and collections.

For those members living in South Eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., the Southern New Jersey location may encourage you to take a road trip. The meeting is conveniently scheduled on the last day of Daylight Saving Time, so you will have that extra hour of daylight for your drive in on Friday evening, and an extra hour of sleep Saturday night.

Anyone interested in presenting a paper or delivering a talk about their recent research activities should contact Paul McConnell email: pmcconnell[at]snip.net to receive a spot on the agenda. Speakers are welcome, but are usually limited by time constraints.

Wheaton Museum of American Glass - 10 minute drive from hotel, a first-class facility with a remarkable collection. This is an excellent museum exhibiting the largest collection of American glass anywhere. Artifacts range from simple household items like bottles and washboards to industrial and commercial objects, and fantastic paperweights and artglass. Resident artists conduct demonstrations daily. A tour of the Museum is planned as part of the agenda for Saturday.

Millville Army Air Field Museum - 15 minute drive from hotel, a local airfield established in 1941 as a U S Army Air Base for defense of the east coast. Used as an advanced training base for P-47 Thunderbolt fighter pilots during WWII. A point of interest for Society members might be the restored Link flight trainer at the museum. The Link trainer employed an unconventional technology that might surprise members.

New Jersey Motorsports Park - 15 minute drive from hotel, Automobile and motorcycle race courses, restaurants (seasonal), bring the Ferrari or Porsche and see what it can do!
